You may have seen these cute little quirky things before. Possibly, your Grandmother had one somewhere in her curio cabinet? Good chance you have stumbled upon one in an antique store. Now head vases are trying making a new debut as the coolest deco item around…at least in my space they are!
My love for head planters started back when I was in my 20s. My grandmother handed me a strange gift right out of her living room. It was a cool and interesting vase that she had for a very long time, from the 1950s. She said it was from a hospital and the hole in the head was for a plant. I immediately fell in love with it! I brought it home and happily displayed it on my fireplace mantle, sans plant.
The vase moved with me a few times, always taking a prominent place amongst my decor. She was a conversation piece, for sure. Some really dug her, while others missed the whimsical magic of her essence (says me).
One day the vase disappeared. I don’t know if I noticed right away, being busy with the comings and goings of 7 kiddos. I looked and looked for where it could be and eventually just decided that it was probably broken and tossed out by one of the children. And time went on.
Recently, I decided it was time to reintroduce some head planters to my decor! I shopped my local thrift shops to no avail, so I found one on EBay. She is a 6” with a blonde bouffant, a green shirt and pearl earrings and necklace, and as you can see above, she is simply beautiful. Now she is jiving with my desk tchotchke in my Florida living room. Another, newer version is chillin on a shelf in a bathroom, sporting a spare hand towel.
You see, no need to worry if you are like me and have a brown thumb. If you would love to have a head vase there are many, many options for use! Just think! You could use your head vase as a unique pen holder on your desk, a beautiful makeup brush holder, or a nifty tooth brush holder in the bathroom. You could try an easy cactus, or just leave her with an empty head…any way you use her, she is so cool!
If you DO have a green thumb, some plants that make interesting “hair” are Lemon Coral Sedum (looks like big curls), or for spiky hair try an aloe plant, it will look great and double for medicinal use. For long flowing hair, try String of Pearls. The options are endless and so much fun! Get creative!
My collection is growing, as I have a newer head planter arriving today! She will be my mint plant vessel and will be perched on my window sill above my kitchen sink (she has arrived and is perched, awaiting her mint bouffant). I look forward to finding another special gal during my summer seeking season! Stay tuned to our Instagram account for this and other summer seeking and design adventures!
