When you think of Ikea, what comes to mind?
Maybe it is their popular "Billy Bookcase" or their "Poang" Chairs. Maybe it is the countless articles about Ikea DIY's you can do on a budget. Or perhaps you think ugh the place where you have to build your own furniture! Many of us in the design world however (or maybe I should speak for myself?), think about Ikea nostalgically.
Ikea has been a staple in home furnishings since their founding in the early 1940's. Since then they have streamlined affordable, danish style furnishings for global access. If you've ever looked through a vintage Ikea catalog, or stumbled across images of what Ikea used to be back in the day before we all got over familiar with their pieces that may remind us of furnishing our first college apartment, you may find yourself daydreaming about owning those pieces. It turns out, Ikea has a serious archive and SERIOUS collectors. Thankfully for us, they are FINALLY bringing back slightly reimagined versions of their vintage designs! So far we have been graced with the "Nytillverkad" collection, and the "Tesammans" collection, both of which are filled with colorful and interesting pieces, nearly straight from their old catalog.
So if you find yourself, like me, wanting to get them while you can, here are the pieces I think you need.
DYVLING swivel chair
IKEA
Formerly known as MILA the "anti-stress" chair (referenced in slide 3), Ikea brings back this icon under the new name DYVLING. Two color ways are currently available (slide's 1&2), green and black. A favorite amongst the NYTILLVERKAD collection, this chair is the ideal IKEA retro design revival! The shape and colors complement any space in the very best way all while maintaining comfortability.

BAGGBODA side table
IKEA
This table was launched in 1971 under the name CROMI. Fitting for a reissue in 2024 when chrome seems to be making a popular comeback in home decor! The color selections include white, and light yellow keeping the relaunch true to its roots. This table is attractive and functional, providing two tiers for storage. Easily you can imagine storing your favorite coffee table books, plants, and knick knacks on either level.

TUVKORNELL Candlestick holders (3)
Sometimes it really is the small details that make the greatest difference in a space. I was immediately drawn to these candlestick holders when I noticed them in store and had to bring them home! They are a super budget friendly to add that pop of retro orange to your space with a sturdy and simple design. You can play with an array of candlestick styles in these holders from traditional tapers to fun colors and designs to create more of a statement piece. Three heights come in one set

KRANSMALVA duvet cover and pillowcases
IKEA
If you're looking to design your bedroom like a 1970's teen beat magazine, this is the duvet for you. This set is offered in both orange and yellow, or mix and match for the ultimate summer bed spread. The flower pattern comes from the MAJSOL flower design, reintroduced in duvet and pillow case format for the 2024 re-release. This pattern will really make your bedroom feel like a time capsule, and I LOVE that about it. The material is also available to purchase as pre-cut fabric, so let your minds eye run wild with possibility!

STOENSE rug (low pile)
IKEA
The STOENSE rug is one of the early icons of the Ikea catalog. Originally launched in 1959 under the name RONDO (I assume for its round nature), this rug can be considered a true mid-century revival! Offered in red or blue for that perfect pop of color, or in off-white or medium gray as a neutral. Round rugs in a space inspired by mid-century modern design can be the perfect organic element to offset the often sharp edges and straight lines of that design period. These rugs are bold yet simple enough to enhance a space otherwise filled with pattern and texture.

TESAMMANS lamp shade
IKEA
Wow, is this collection such a colorful masterpiece! Different than the above mentioned styles the designs in the Tessammans collection are a collaboration, not retro revival pieces, however much of the color pallet and design choices could for sure be seen as influenced by design trends of the past! One of the standout pieces to me from this collection are the lamp shades! The perfect 1970's hues collaborating together to create a perfect eye catching piece. They can be displayed as a stand alone accent, or utilized as functional overhead pendant lighting! The simple shapes make them a great piece to compliment any space whether it be minimalistic and needing a certain pop of shape or color, or an already layered space like the one staged above!

TESAMMANS hanging decoration, multicolor
Yes, another hanging piece you just need from the IKEA TESAMMANS collection. It's simple, it's bold, it's beautiful, and it's retro inspired. This piece reminds me greatly of the MCM Atomic-age kinetic mobiles. They are a simple form of decoration, great to hang in a corner that needs attention, all without being too dense. The simple shapes are bent metal and not too abstract.

Truly I could carry on about how wonderful these new collections at IKEA are. They heard our call to revive their famous retro designs, and in turn they are reclaiming their name. True style is coming back across the board at IKEA, and as a designer I am here for it. These selection can meld flawlessly into your space and with true vintage pieces to help create a seamless look. Utilizing vintage pieces is important to both of us at Et Moi, yet we fully support the collide of new and old when it truly helps define your space, or bring out the YOU in it. This post is meant to curate pieces from the newer collection to help you decide what is right for you and your space when browsing.
